Johnnie Walker and his partner, Goodwin Byrd, purchased Basnight and Garrett Funeral Home in 1946 and established Walker Funeral Home and Furniture Company. The funeral home was operated in the back of the furniture store on King Street in downtown Windsor. In 1970, Johnnie Walker’s son, Andy, came to work as a licensed funeral director and embalmer. Andy purchased Mr. Byrd’s interest in 1973, and separated the funeral business from the furniture business in 1985 forming Walker Funeral Home. Walker Funeral Home grew under Andy Walker’s leadership for the next ten years, expanding with locations in Plymouth, Bethel and Columbia. In 1998, he moved his Windsor location from North King Street to their new facility at 790 US Highway 13 Bypass. The newest facility was opened in Williamston in 2002. Walker Funeral Homes are operating under the guidance of Andy Walker today, serving the families of Bertie, Washington, Martin, Edgecombe, Pitt and surrounding counties. Our motto, “Our Family Serving Yours”, are words we hold dear. We are here to serve with compassion, dignity and respect.

Walker Funeral Home-Windsor
Established in 1946, Walker Funeral Home originally operated out of the back of a furniture store on King Street in downtown Windsor. In 1998, the business relocated its Windsor operations from North King Street to a new facility at 790 US Highway 13 Bypass.
In 1937 Lewis Ayers opened Bethel Funeral Parlor on Main Street. Ten years later, it moved to its present location on James Street with Burton Ray Ayers continuing the family business until his death in 1978. It was purchased by Andy Walker in 1990 and serves today as Walker-Ayers Chapel, a full service funeral chapel serving Pitt and Martin Counties.
