Walter Ward Whitaker, 73 of S. King St., died Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at Accordus of Creekside in Ahoskie.

Walter was born on November 5, 1948 in Martin County to the late Clivert David and Irene Bailey Whitaker. He was retired from Weyerhaeuser as a paper maker. Walter attended the Gold Point Church of Christ and was retired as a volunteer firefighter with the Windsor Fire Dept. and as an EMT with Bertie County Rescue Squad. He was preceded in death by daughter, Melissa Whitaker and brothers, CD Whitaker, Bobby Whitaker and Edward Whitaker.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne Crisp Whitaker of the home; sons, Martin Phelps (Kelly) of Windsor and Jamie Phelps of Windsor; brothers, Gene Whitaker (Linda) of Robersonville; sisters, Faye Williams (John) of Robersonville, Juanita Bullock of Robersonville, Vivian Stalls (Phillip) of Everetts, Brenda Powell (Bill) of Robersonville, Dale Manning (Keith) of Williamston and Ruth Jenkins (Bill) of Rocky Mount; grandchildren, Jonathan Dail (Stacey), Taylor Dail, Riley Phelps, Sydney Phelps, Paisley Phelps, Aubrey Phelps; great grandchildren, Liam and Ainsley Dail.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 28, 2022 at 2:00 PM at the Walker Funeral Chapel with Rev. Chris Minton officiating.

The family will receive friends on Friday one hour prior to the funeral service and other times from the home, 1550 south king street. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Windsor Fire Dept., 501 North King Street, Windsor, NC 27983.
