Vashti Conner Smithwick, 99 of S. King Street died Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at Vidant Medical Center.

Vashti was born on November 30, 1922 in Bertie County to the late McKinnley and Mildred Phelps Conner. She was a member of Greens Cross Baptist Church. She loved sewing, doll making, cooking, and volunteering at the Brian Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maywell "Mitchell" Smithwick, whom she married in December 1941; daughter, Rebecca Congleton; brothers, James Conner and McKinley Conner; sisters, Sybil Ambrose and Gladys Holliday; son-in-laws, William Blake, Jack Stanley, and Kenneth Congleton.

Survivors include her daughters, Dianne Dixon (Richard) of Jacksonville, FL, Shirley Blake of Raleigh, and Kathryn "Mickie" Stanley of Williamston; sister, Faye Jernigan of Askewville; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 26, 2021 at 2:00 PM at the Walker Funeral Chapel with Ed Ford officiating. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and other times at the home. Memorial contributions may be made to Greens Cross Baptist Church, 439 US 17 Windsor, NC 27983.
