Shirley Jean Phelps Hoggard, 81 of Bennett Dr., died Saturday, November 27, 2021 at her home.

Shirley was born on July 27, 1940 in Bertie County to the late Russell Selman and Carthina Harrison Phelps. She attended the Church of God and was a homemaker. Shirley loved fishing, gardening and loved growing flowers. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Emmit Hoggard and daughter, Margaret Jean "Jeanie" Fleming, three sisters and one brother.

Survivors include her sons, Thomas William Fleming (Hope) of Texas, Julian Russell Fleming (Connie) of Creswell, James Carroll Fleming (Rachael) of Colerain; daughters, Teresa Gail Clifton (Alan) of Plymouth, Anita F. Bunch of Lexington, Robin Fleming Krantz (Gerald) of Lynchburg, Va; brother, Russell Wayne Phelps (Quentina) of Hertford; grandchildren, sixteen; great grandchildren, fourteen.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Edgewood Cemetery with Pastor Randy Pierce officiating.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Walker Funeral Home and other times at the home.
