Obituary

Sandra Barber Shuler, born to Cushion Howard and Ruth Lilley Barber on December 19, 1946, in Williamston, North Carolina, passed away on July 29, 2026, in Greenville, North Carolina. She was a loving, kind, generous, and devoted mother, grandmother, and friend whose days were marked by faith, giving, and loving loudly. She is survived by a brother, Joseph Barber of Plainview, Minnesota and a sister, Patricia Jimison of North Charleston, South Carolina. She is preceded in death by a brother, C. B. Barber and a sister, Sharon Scott, both of Williamston, North Carolina.

She leaves behind three children; Donna Faulkner Garnett (Chris) of Mooresville, North Carolina, Michael W. Faulkner (Toya) of Greenville, North Carolina, and Derrick P. Faulkner of Oakboro, North Carolina. She was also a proud grandmother to eleven, a great-grandmother to one, and she was friend to countless others whose lives were brightened by her kindness, diligence and quick sense of humor.

Ms. Shuler earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from East Carolina University, becoming the first in her family to earn a college degree. She was a strong example of hard work and perseverance to her children and grandchildren, doing all she could to help those in need. Her mind was disciplined, her purpose clear, and her heart devoted to those she loved.

For more than thirty years, Ms. Shuler taught high school mathematics, shaping young minds with patience and resolve. In the classroom, she gave of herself with a loving authority of one who understood that learning is both labor and a gift. She instructed not only in the rules and applications of mathematics, but also in discipline, confidence, and the value of hard work. Many students and colleagues remember her as one who made a difficult subject bearable, and sometimes even delightful, by the love in her heart for the young adults to whom she gave her time.

She enjoyed the outdoors, was adventurous, and found pleasure in the simple pastimes. She spent time playing tennis, she enjoyed golf for several years in the mountains of North Carolina, and for a time made her own sourdough bread. These pursuits spoke to a life that appreciated movement, beauty, patience, and the honest work of the hands. Whether beneath open skies, upon a fairway, or in the warmth of her kitchen, Sandra embraced the rhythms of life with contentment and grace.

Those who knew her will remember her as loving, generous, and friendly. She welcomed others with a gracious heart, gave without boasting, and carried herself with the kind of warmth that made burdens lighter. Her life was a true blessing in the lives of family, friends, students, and neighbors alike.

As the poet John Donne wrote, “No man is an island, entire of itself.” Sandra’s life gave truth to that wisdom, for she lived in fellowship with others, and her love reached outward in many directions. Though death has closed her mortal eyes, it has not erased the light she gave. In the Christian hope, we trust that what is sown in weakness is raised in glory, and that those who die in the Lord are held forever in His mercy.

May Sandra be remembered with tenderness and thanksgiving. May her family be comforted by the richness of her years, the strength of her example, and the assurance that love, once given in sincerity, does not perish. And may her soul rest in the eternal peace of her Savior, whom she served with a faithful heart.

Sandra departed this earthly realm following a hospital stay. Though her passing brings sorrow to all who knew her, her life remains a testimony to the goodness of God, who grants each soul its appointed time beneath the heavens and receives the faithful into everlasting peace.

A memorial service will be held on October 17, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Walker Funeral Home in Williamston, North Carolina.
