Robert Lewis Hoggard, 88, passed away peacefully at ECU Bertie Hospital in Windsor on
Sunday, March 31st , 2024. Robert had suffered from congestive heart failure for almost the last
year of his life. Many thanks to the kind, compassionate, diligent care rendered by Dr. Phillip G.
Harris and the staff at ECU Bertie Hospital. Robert is survived by his wife, Minnie Coltrain
Hoggard, whom he was married to for 68 years. His son, Lewis Wynne Hoggard and his
grandson, Robert Warner Alexander Blake also survive him. His daughter, Robbin Hoggard
Blake and her husband, Jon Warner Blake both pre-deceased him. He has numerous nieces
and nephews as well as sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law living.
Robert was born on November 9 th , 1935 in Snakebite Township, Bertie County, North Carolina.
He was born to John Henry Hoggard and Vivian Gurley Bazemore. He was the youngest of his
family, with sisters, Marion and Vivian and brothers, Rudolph, Forest, Alton and Tommy. The
family purchased a farm in 1940 in Hoggard Mill just outside Windsor. This is the farm on which
Robert was raised and the one that he lived and worked on for his lifetime.
Robert officially took over the farm after his father's death as a teenager. Besides farming,
Robert was the manager of W.R. Grace Fertilizer Company and later an area director for E.L.
Ross, Inc. He also created Bertie Crop Insurance which provided crop insurance to farmers for
over thirty years. Early in his farming career, he served in numerous positions for the North
Carolina Peanut Growers Association and North Carolina Pork Council. He served in the North
Carolina National Guard and the Windsor Fire Department, from which he retired. Robert
always enjoyed cooking mainly BBQ chicken but also frying fish with others including the Cashie
Cook Club and at the Windsor Veterans Club.
A graveside service will be held at Edgewood Cemetery in Windsor at 2:30 PM on Saturday
May 11 th, 2024, presided over by Rev. Stafford Beasley.
A celebration of life will follow immediately afterwards at Cashie Country Club. All are welcome to attend.
