Obituary

Oswald Lafayette Spivey, Jr., 88 died November 27, 2018 at Chowan River Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born March 4, 1930 in Norfolk, Virginia to the late Virginia Thompson Rhea Spivey and Oswald Lafayette Spivey.

Fondly known as "Sonny", he received his education in Windsor before attending Fork Union Military Academy in Staunton, VA from 1947-1950.

Being patriotic and having a desire to serve his country, Sonny enlisted in the U. S. Air Force for a 4-year tour. Following his military service, Sonny was engaged briefly in the retail business world before working at Newport News Dry Dock and Shipyard. After 34 years, he moved back home to Windsor to enjoy his retirement.  He was a member and usher of the Cashie Baptist Church.

Growing up surrounded by the Cashie River, Sonny had a natural love of boats. He also took pleasure in cars, airplanes, and working in the yard. He never met a stranger and would engage everyone he met in conversation.  He had an uncanny propensity for numbers and dates, often amazing others with his detailed recall of many events. Known to be reliable and dependable, Sonny was a man of his word and expected no less from others.

Sonny is survived by his sister, Mary Rhea Spivey Jones and husband, Burton, of Edenton; nieces Ginny Gardner Waff of Edenton and Bess Gardner Wood of Raleigh, and nephew Bill Gardner, Jr. of Edenton. He is also survived by grand-nephews Gardner Culpepper and Bill Wood of Raleigh and grand-niece Emma Gardner of Wendell; and other Spivey and Rhea relatives.
