Maurice Wayne Gardner, 82 of US Hwy 64, died Monday, January 16, 2023, at UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh.

Maurice was born on November 08, 1940, in Martin County to the late Hardie Maurice and Lucy Lilley Gardner. He was retired as a truck driver, having worked for Thurston Motor Lines and Brown Transport. Maurice married Janie Ayers on August 30, 1963. Maurice was a member of Siloam Methodist Church. He loved playing music and was in several groups. He played at several nursing homes and was a lay minister, being generous with his time to help others. He loved his dog. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Dallas Gardner; sisters, Hazel Morgan, Gaynell Rogerson and Judith Selph, and his beloved dog Bandit.

Survivors include his wife, Janie Ayers Gardner of the home; sons, Kevin Gardner of Williamston, and Eric Gardner of Jamesville; daughter, Gina Gardner Grimes (David) of Smithfield; grandchildren, Madeline, Lydia, and Margo Grimes.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Walker Chapel with Rev. Larris Tolson and Rev. Clifford Britton officiating. Burial will follow in the Gardner Family Cemetery. Johnny Gardner, Braxton Gardner, Brantley Gardner, Johnny Barber, Ryan Boyden, Milt Bennett and David Grimes will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and other times from the home. Memorial contributions may be made to Jamesville EMS and Rescue, PO Box 17, Jamesville, NC 27846.
