Mary Jeannette Shaw Mardre, 83, of Windsor, N.C., died Saturday, April 23, 2022 in The Greenville Service League Hospice House, Greenville, N.C.

She was born in Windsor, N.C. on July 17, 1938, the daughter of Jeannette Sessoms and Theodore Roosevelt Shaw. Mary and her brother, Theodore Roosevelt Shaw, Jr. grew up together in Windsor. She was married to her husband, George Lewis Mardre, IV of Windsor for 46 years. In the early years of their marriage, she and George lived in various areas of England and Germany while George served in the U.S. Air Force, and they settled in Windsor in 1961.

She is survived by three children, son George Lewis Mardre, V and wife, Hope, of Montgomery, AL, daughter Mary Jeannette Moseley and  husband, Ted of Kill Devil Hills, daughter Barrett Roberson Mardre and wife, Susan of Durham; five grandchildren, Mary Shaw Goodwin of Greenville, Clara Bray Moseley and husband Zach of Moyock, George Lewis Mardre, VI and wife Meghan of Okinawa, Japan, Theodore Gilliard Moseley, IV and wife Jenny of Kill Devil Hills, and Margaret Ann Mardre of Charlotte, and three great grandsons, Beau Robert Goodwin, George Lewis Mardre, VII, and Ralph William Mardre.

Mary Shaw Mardre lived a full and very musical life. She began playing the organ for services in St. Thomas Episcopal Church at the age of 14 and provided music for many weddings.  Mary went back to college to finish her degree in music education at East Carolina University at the age of 46. She taught general music classes in nearly every Bertie County elementary public school. Mary also taught piano lessons to many children and adults throughout her life. She taught in her home until 2020, when circumstances forced her to retire.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 pm on Monday, April 25 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Windsor. Burial will be in the church yard. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church or to The Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice Home, 920 Wellness Drive, Greenville, N.C. 27834.
