Dateline: Merry Hill, NC

Mr. Marvin Ray Davenport age 85, a longtime resident of Merry Hill died Saturday, August 9, 2025, following a brief decline in health.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Merry Hill Baptist Church with Pastor Wil Hoggard officiating. Music will also be provided by Pastor Wil Hoggard. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery with William Cofield, Adam Hughes, Erik Hughes, Finn Hughes, Tyler Loveland, and Brian Smithwick serving as pallbearers. Braxton Cobb and Tommy Mizelle will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Marvin was born on September 1, 1939, to Carlie and Myrtle Simpson Davenport. He attended Chowan County Schools and later served his country in the North Carolina National Guard. Mr. Marvin retired from R.J. Reynolds and was an active member of Merry Hill Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, gardening, and going out to eat!

In addition to his parents, Mr. Marvin was preceded in death by his wife, Amelia "Sis" Smithwick Davenport; daughter, Paula Davenport; sister, Margie D. Ward; and brothers, Douglas and R.B. Davenport.

Survivors include: his daughter, Penny Price and husband Bill of Windsor; one sister, Margret Phelps of Wilmington; three grandchildren: Adam Hughes, Erik Hughes, and Heather Loveland; and five great- grandchildren: Natalie Loveland, Finn, Ellison, Mac, and Gage Hughes.
