Lillie Leary Byrum, 85, of Granville Street, passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at ECU Bertie Hospital.  She was born in Bertie County Oct. 21, 1937 to the late Dewey and Fannie White Leary and was predeceased by her husband, Griffin Byrum and three sisters: Dotsie Nurmi, Elizabeth Speller, and Carrie White. Lillie was a member of Cashie Baptist Church. She retired from the Bertie County Board of Education and loved to dance.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 1, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Cashie Baptist Church. Rev. Stafford Beasley will officiate.  A burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery.

She is survived by sons, Ernie Byrum of Newport News, VA, and Thomas Byrum and wife Robin of Windsor, NC, sister, Mary Leary Davis of Windsor; grandchildren, Jennifer Byrum and Niki Hale; great grandchildren, Sophie Crabtree and Ella Hale.

The family will receive friends from the home of Mary Davis, 862 S. King Street. Memorial gifts may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation, 2418 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27607.
