Lela Mae Taylor Whitfield, 92 of Circle Drive, died Thursday, January 13, 2022, at Vidant Bertie Hospital.

Lela was born on May 30, 1929, in Martin County, to the late John Henry and Clero Wynn Taylor. She was an administrative assistant at Martin Community College. Lela was a member of the Hamilton Church of Christ and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Clarence Whitfield; brothers, Curtis, Sam, Elton and John Henry Taylor; sisters, Emma Jean Edmondson and Ethel Coburn Taylor.

Survivors include; sons, Richard Whitfield (Jill) of Williamston and J.C. Whitfield (Vickie) of Oak City; daughter, Deborah Whitfield of Branson, MO; brother, Glenn Taylor (Dee) of Stokes; sisters in law, Pauline, Hilda, and Thelma Taylor; grandchildren, Angelia Leggett, Jason Whitfield, Crystal Whitfield, Caroline Evenson and Justin Whitfield; great-grandchildren, 5; great-great-grandchildren, 2.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Martin Memorial Gardens, with James Hutchinson officiating.
