Joseph Saunders Leggett, 96 of Bear Grass Rd., died Friday, November 24, 2023, at McGregor Downs Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Joe was born on March 12, 1927, in Martin County, to the late Mack Daniel and Beulah Biggs Leggett. He was farmer and store owner for many years in the Bear Grass Community. He served his country in the US Coast Guard. Joe retired as a volunteer and charter member of the Bear Grass Fire Department. He also served as Chief of Police in Jamesville and Oak City, and constable/deputy sheriff in Bear Grass. Joe attended New Hope Baptist Church. Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Tripp Leggett, son, Joseph Leggett, Jr., daughters, Kathleen Revels, Mary Jo Wynn and Josephine Leggett, brothers, King, Leroy, Mack Henry, John D., and William Leggett' sisters, Annie Mae Starnes, Mary Rogers, Viola Sanderlin and Rachel Leggett.

Survivors include; sons, Mack Saunders Leggett (Susan) of Greenville and James Irving Leggett of Edenton; daughters, Patricia Bullock (Joe) of Bear Grass and Audrey Pearl Hodges Taylor of Bear Grass; brothers, Jimmy Walker Leggett, and Ernest T. Leggett both of Bear Grass; sister, Betty Ray Starnes of Charlotte; grandchildren, seventeen; great grandchildren, thirteen; great great grandchildren, four.

A private family graveside service will be held.
