Mr. John Mitchell, age 85, a resident of Bull Hill RD. Windsor, passed away late Friday, October 24, 2025 at ECU Health Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at Edgewood Baptist Church in Windsor with pastor Joey Nixon officiating and Diane Dunlow providing the music. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery with Mitchell Bryum, Carlos Bryum, David Mitchell, Warren Mitchell, Danny Bazemore and Mike Hoggard will be serving as pallbearers. .
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Mr. John was born on July 9, 1940 to Lucy Leggett Mitchell and John W. Mitchell. He attended Bertie County Schools, and later married the former Jewel Rawls on September 11, 1972 who survives. Mr. John worked for Lea Lumber Company, Lancaster Hatchery, and Evans Grocery Store before making his career with Bertie County Schools where he would later retire with the maintenance department. He was a lifelong resident of Bertie County and an active member of Edgewood Baptist Church where he served as deacon, and enjoyed participating in the Sunday congregational singing. In his spare time he enjoyed farming, and especially enjoyed spending time with his equestrian friend "Don Juan" his miniature horse who would nudge him for the treats Mr. John kept in his pocket.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ebenezer "Ebb" Mitchell; and is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jewel Rawls Mitchell; two sisters: Frances Mitchell Bryum of Windsor, and Nell Mitchell Grantham of Freemont, NC; other survivors include: numerous nieces and nephews, and his very special friend Don Juan.
