Dateline: Merry Hill, NC

Mr. Jerry Hampton Cowand, 85, a longtime resident of Merry Hill passed away on July 8, 2025 at Windsor House, of Windsor. Mr. Jerry was born on August 8, 1939 in the Windsor Hospital to Starkey Valentine Cowand and Nettie Jernigan Cowand who are now deceased and is the last of his 15 siblings of all which preceded him in death. Mr. Jerry was a graduate of Merry Hill High School and served in the US Army from 1957 to 1959 and then served in the Army Reserved till 1963. He was a member of Masonic Lodge Charity #5 and retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a pipefitter and designer. After his retirement he worked for AVOCA Farms for nearly a decade as a security officer. Mr. Jerry was married to the former Brenda Joyce Hartman who preceded him in death.

Survivors include one son, Jerry Cowand II (Joan) of Merry Hill; two grandchildren: Jerry H. Cowand III of Virginia Beach, and Sarah Rock (Aaron) of South Haven, Mississippi: and one great grandchild: A. J. Rock.  Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

The Cowand Family wishes to express a special thank you to the staff of Windsor House, and Gentiva Hospice for their special care of Mr. Jerry in his last phase of life.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday July 16, 2025 at 7:00 PM in the chapel of Walker Funeral Home, Windsor with Military Honors and Masonic Rites rendered.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
