Obituary

Dateline: Williamston, NC

Gloria Griffin Bowen, 82, beloved mother and sister, slipped away peacefully to be with her Lord, Monday night, June 18, at the Edgecombe Health and Rehab facility in Tarboro, NC.  Mrs. Bowen was born August 25, 1935 to the late Pattie Mizell Griffin and James Thomas Griffin in Martin County.  She was married to Mack Eugene Bowen June 7, 1952, who predeceased her December 24, 2013.

Nothing gave Gloria more pleasure than to have family and friends at her home for a meal and plenty of conversation and laughter.  She loved her family and her faith in God was simple and true, like that of a child, just as Jesus spoke of often in the Gospels.

Mrs. Bowen was predeceased by her husband, her parents, brothers, Ernest William Griffin, Noah Griffin,  James Willis Griffin and Edward Warren Griffin; foster brother, Claudie Keel; sister Ezefferlee Griffin Moore,
Iola Griffin Jones Moore, Doris Griffin Knowles, Frances Griffin Hamilton, and niece, JoAnn Pipkin Harrell, and nephews, Michael Eugene Hamilton, James Mark Hamilton, and Jerry Lynn Jones.

Mrs. Bowen is survived by her daughters, Sharon Bowen Fissette and husband, Bruce of Newport Beach, CA; Deborah Bowen Brown, Williamston, and her sister, Judy Griffin Ellis and husband, Wayne, of Rocky Mount, NC.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, loved and cherished by her. She loved seeing them and their children and their own grandchildren. Mrs. Bowen's namesake and niece, Gloria Griffin Hassall, and husband, David, of Ballycastle, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, arrived here in hopes of seeing her aunt once more, but arrived just hours after she passed away.

The family would like to thank the staff of AseraCare Hospice for their diligent and loving care of Mrs. Bowen, especially Kim, and would also like to thank the staff of Edgecombe health and Rehab, especially Brenda, Brittany, Lori, and so many others whose kindness and compassion will never be forgotten.

A graveside funeral service will be held Friday, June 22, 2018 at 2:00 PM in Woodlawn Cemetery.  The Rev. Ray Tavenner will officiate.  The family will receive friends Friday June 22 nd from 12:30 PM until 1:45 PM at Walker Funeral Home and at other times from the home of Deborah Bowen Brown 115 Marshall Ave., Williamston.
