Obituary

George Hampton Cobb (87) of Taylor Street, Windsor, NC passed away May 21, 2026 surrounded by family. He was born on May 18, 1939 to Wade Hampton Cobb and Bettie Holder Cobb of Merry Hill, NC.

He joined the Army in 1958, stationed in France and later obtained his GED while in service. He was a truck driver in the oil and gas industry for over 40 years, last employed with Jernigan Oil and Propane.

In 1972, George married the love of his life, Peggy. Together they built a beautiful life and shared 53 years of marriage. He was an extraordinary father to Hope Cobb and Brent Cobb and the best Papa to his grandchildren, Jace and Reese Cobb, all of whom he loved dearly.

Outside of work and family, George had a passion for cooking for large events as part of the Cashie Cook Club and was an active firefighter with Windsor Fire Department for over 20 years. He was the second full time paid fireman in Windsor and also served as a volunteer with Bertie rescue squad. He was an inactive member of Riverside Baptist Church, Merry Hill, NC.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father and his sisters Nell Wells of Burgaw, NC and Ellen Cobb (age 4). He is survived by his devoted wife, Peggy; his children Hope Cobb of Wilmington, NC and Brent Cobb (Katie) of Farmville, NC; his two grandchildren, Jace and Reese Cobb; sister Judy Cobb Widgren (Peter) of Ohio; sister-in-laws, Marion Cale of Windsor, Jo Johnson of Merry Hill and Dianne Davis of Rocky Mount; and nieces and nephews and extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.

George's celebration of life will be Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Windsor Fire Department with Judy Cobb Widgren and Pastor Jay Rivenbark as speakers. Private burial will be held later with the following acting as honorary pallbearers:  David Overton, Billy Dunlow, John Ed Whitehurst, Ernest Carraway, Billy Griffin and Bob Capehart. The visitation will be one hour prior to the service. All who knew and loved him are invited to attend and share their favorite memories.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Windsor Fire Department in George's honor.
