Obituary

Donald Gray Byrum, Sr., age 88, passed away at his home on U.S. 13 North in Windsor on Sunday, May 31, 2026.

Born on August 31, 1937, at the family home on Eden House Beach in Bertie County, Donald was the son of the late Coy Worth Byrum. and Fannie Mabel Daniels Byrum. Donald shared more than 60 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Bessie Bowen Byrum, and is now reunited with her in eternal peace.

In addition to his parents and wife, Donald was preceded in death by his sisters, Betty Ruth Domecq and Ernestine Matvey, and his brother, Coy "CD" Byrum.

Donald was a faithful member and deacon of Edgewood Baptist Church.

He loved the outdoors and could often be found hunting or fishing, two of his greatest passions. More than anything, treasured time spent with family and friends. He especially enjoyed sharing his love of fishing with anyone willing to join him on the water or listen to him reminisce about his favorite fishing memories

His first and perhaps favorite occupation was commercial fishing, a lifelong pursuit that reflected his deep connection to the outdoors. In 1960, Donald proudly served his country in the United States Army and later in the National Guard. Following his military service, he worked as a supervisor for Lea Lumber Company until its closure and was later employed by Waste Industries.

He leaves behind cherished memories with his daughter, Shirley B. Webb and husband, Donald Webb, of Wendell; his son, Donald G. Byrum, Jr. "DB," of Windsor; and his grandsons, Christopher W. Webb and Daniel M. Webb.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Edgewood Cemetery, with Coy Domecq speaking. Family and friends are invited to visit with the family following the service at the cemetery.

Donald will be remembered for his love of family and the countless hours he spent on the water doing what he loved most. His legacy of hard work, faith, and kindness will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
