Obituary

DAVID LLOYD HUMPHREY (August 6, 1948 – April 16, 2022)

David Lloyd Humphrey of Kelford, N.C., died at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, N.C. following a brief illness.  Mr. Humphrey was a 1966 graduate of Bertie High School and a 1972 graduate of East Carolina University.  He subsequently went on to a distinguished career in public service with the state of North Carolina.  Prior to his retirement, he was the Area 1 Coordinator for the Eastern Branch of Emergency Management, responsible for on-scene emergency response for seven counties.  In 2008, he was awarded the Secretary of the N. C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety's Gold Circle Award for his "expertise in readiness, planning, professionalism, and dedication to the citizens of North Carolina" and was also the proud recipient of the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine award.

Mr. Humphrey's greatest legacy within the community was the time he spent working with the Kelford Volunteer Fire Department.  His second "career" as a volunteer firefighter extended over a period of more than 30 years, seven of those as department chief.  Even when his health no longer permitted him to actively respond to fires with "boots on the ground," he continued to share his time and talents in support of their efforts.  In honor of Mr. Humphrey's years of service and commitment to the department, his volunteer firefighter number 6204 has been officially retired from use.

The funeral service will be held at the Kelford Baptist Church, 103 East Church Street, on Saturday, April 23 rd , with arrangements coordinated through the Walker Funeral Home in Windsor, N.C.  Visitation will be in the church sanctuary from 1 to 2 p.m., followed by the service and interment at the Roxobel/Kelford cemetery.  Please feel free to dress casually and comfortably.  Facemasks are optional; attendees should make a decision about whether or not to wear a mask during the indoor visitation and service based on their own comfort level and health concerns.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Mr. Humphrey's memory to either Kelford Baptist Church, PO Box 37, Kelford, N.C. 27847 or to the Kelford Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 176, Kelford, N.C. 27847.
