David Dearl Gurganus, age 91, of Williamston, NC passed away in the early morning of Thursday January 22, 2026, at The Windsor House.

David was born in Martin County on January 25, 1934, to Gertrude Clark Gurganus and William David Gurganus. He graduated from Robersonville High School in 1952 having earned first team all-conference honors in basketball in his final year.

He served for two years in the United States Army (April 1953 – April 1955). On October 13, 1956, he wed Doris Bowen, whom he loved deeply. He was a dedicated husband and provider for his family by being a lifelong farmer. He continued farming until 2023 when he had to stop due to health concerns.

David was predeceased by his parents, all four siblings and his beloved wife.

David and Doris were proud of their three children, Phillip Dearl Gurganus, Kathryn G. Mellette (Gene), and Kenneth M. Gurganus (Johna). They dearly loved all ten of their grandchildren (Mandy, Davey, Kelly, Jessica, Mike, Gene Jr., Hayli, Clark, Andrew and Landon). They were also blessed with thirteen great-grandchildren. He was also close to his many nieces and nephews.

David was a member of Everetts Baptist Church for almost seventy years and served in several capacities including deacon and Sunday School Superintendent.

He loved hunting (preferably quail) and fishing (bream). He was an avid follower of the St. Louis Cardinals (baseball), Boston Celtics (basketball) and Green Bay Packers (football). He also held a special place in his heart for the 1957 NCAA Men's Basketball National Champion UNC Tarheels.

A memorial service will be held at Everetts Baptist Church on Sunday, March 8, 2026 at 2:30 PM with Reverend Larry Moore officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the same location.

The family thanks the staff of the Windsor House for providing comfort and care during his final months of life.
