Brenda Joyce Hartman Cowand, 78, of Old Merry Hill Rd., died Monday March 6, 2023 at ECU Chowan Hospital.

Brenda was born on October 27, 1944 in Logan, WV. to the late Garland Crockett Hartman and Virginia Katherine Sloan Hartman. She was a homemaker. Brenda was competitive in her youth in softball and bowling. In her later years she was a local quilter and loved sewing. She enjoyed cake decorating, loved to shop and cook. Brenda also loved entertaining and singing gospel and blue grass music. She was a friend to all. She was preceded in death by her sister, Gail Wood.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry Hampton Cowand of the home; son, Jerry H. Cowand II (Joan) of Merry Hill; grandchildren, Jerry H. Cowand III of Chesapeake, VA and Sarah V. Rock (Aaron) of Southaven, MS; great grandchild, A.J. Rock.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Walker Chapel with Mr. Howard Simpson officiating. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM at the funeral home.
