Betty Cowan Hughes 89, of Republican Road, died Friday June 5, 2020 at Vidant Bertie Hospital. She was born in Pitt County March 16, 1931 to the late Eugene Grissom Cowan and Minnie Wilson Cowan. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Herman Bradford Hughes, brother, Luther Mitchell Cowan and sister, Sarah Cowan Phelps. Betty was an avid member of Republican Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher, trustee of the church, assistance treasurer and member of the WMU. She donated and helped plant the shrubs around the church many years ago and kept the shrubbery up until her later years. Betty loved being in her yard, digging in the dirt brought her so much joy. As an avid reader, she knew all about the farm life she lived.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 7, 2020 at Republican Baptist Church at 2:00 PM. Rev. Howard Taylor and Rev. J. N. Baggett will officiate. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery.

Survivors include her son, Eugene "Gene" Hughes and wife Cathy; daughter, Belinda Hughes Helmkamp; grandson, Gregory Eugene Hughes and wife Jenny; great grandson, Austin Wyatt Hughes all of Windsor.

The family will receive friends Sunday, June 7 ^th from 1-2 PM prior to the service and from the home at other times. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Republican Baptist Church, % Reddick White, 1141 Republican Road, Windsor, NC 27983.
