Betty Dunbar Chandler, a longtime resident of Chocowinity, passed away late Sunday evening November 23, 2025 at Service League of Greenville Hospice House.

Born Betty Rae Dunbar, on September 6, 1943, to Dora Belle Cuthrell Dunbar and Leon Nash ''Lynn' Dunbar in the Beaufort County Hospital, Betty was one of eight children. She attended Beaufort County Schools and later married Earl Thomas Chandler on December 31, 1968, and they would enjoy nearly 57 years of marriage.  Betty was a wife, and homemaker who although never worked full time, enjoyed her part time jobs and formed lasting friendships with her employers, co-workers, and their families. She worked for several years for Brownie Bakery, One Hour Martinizing, (now The Cleaners), and later for her brother at D&H Red & White. After her husband's retirement, she assisted him with his endeavors and was known for her jewelry and pocketbook parties. For the past 20 years she and Earl worked together part time  delivering medications for O'Neal's Pharmacy. She truly enjoyed the people and helping others. Betty loved to travel, beach vacations, gardening, country music, reading, and was an avid Elvis fan. She'd ride just about anywhere for a good country music show. Betty also enjoyed clothing and accessories, and was known to often make a fashion statement when going out. Her favorite place was the home she and Earl built and shared on Bragaw Lane where she enjoyed decorating for the Christmas holidays, and won several awards for the best decorated home. Betty was also a lifelong member of Haw Branch Church of Christ.

In addition to her parents, Betty was pre-deceased by two brothers: infant, Leon Nash Dunbar, and Milford L. "Red' Dunbar; one sister, Ruby D. Ensley; five brother In-laws: Donald Hardy, John Jefferson, Bonner Hollis, Jerry Ward, and Lou Ensley; and one sister in-law, Reba J. Dunbar.   Surviving in addition to her husband, Earl Thomas Chandler, include: one son, Greg Purser (Everett), and one stepson, Tommy Chandler (Babs) all of Washington; five sisters: Doris D. Hollis of Chocowinity, Elsie D. Jefferson of Grimesland, Joyce D. Ward of Washington, Patricia D. Hardy, and Arlene D. Jones (Kenny) of Chocowinity; and special friend, Joyce Ann Woolard of Washington; and many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Betty knew the joy of what having a large close family meant. Her sisters, and close friends have been a great blessing to she and Earl, especially in the last year.

A private viewing for family and close friends will be held at Haw Branch Church of Christ. Followed by a private graveside service at Pamlico Memorial Gardens with her nephew Jeff Hardy officiating. Edmond Guthrie, Jeff Hardy, Neal O'Neal, Richard Braskett, Timmy Jefferson, Willie Crisp will be serving as pallbearers.
