Bessie Bowen Byrum, 78, of US Hwy 13, passed away August 3 , 2022, at ECU Bertie Hospital. She was born in Bertie County, October 14 , 1943, to the late J. E. Bowen, Sr., and Fannie Dunlow Bowen. Bessie was predeceased by a sister, Sue B. Jones and brother, Rodney Bowen. She was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church. She worked at Blue Bell (Wrangler) for more than 30 years. After that, she received a CNA II from Martin Community College and worked at Bertie Vidant Hospital. She loved to spend time with her family, garden, and make baskets.

A graveside funeral service will be held Sunday, August 7, 2022, at 3:00 PM in Edgewood Cemetery.  Dr. Rev. Chris Lee will officiate. The family will receive friends Sunday, August 7 ^th from 1:00 PM until 2:45 PM at Walker Funeral Home.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Gray Byrum of the home; daughter, Shirley B. Webb and husband, Donald Webb of Wendell; son, Donald G. Byrum, Jr. "DB"  of Windsor; brothers, J. E. Bowen, Jr., Freddie Bowen, and Danny Ray Bowen all of Windsor; grandchildren, Christopher Webb of Rocky Mount, and Daniel Webb of Charleston, SC.
