Alton "Monk" Otis Jernigan, 89, passed away suddenly Tuesday January 17, 2023. He was born in Bertie County January 10, 1934 to the late Otis and Anne Ruth Mizelle Jernigan and predeceased by a son, Randy Lane Jernigan; sister, Betty Ann Jernigan; brothers, Ronnie "Bonnie" Jernigan, McWayne Jernigan, and Bobby Jernigan.  Monk was a boat builder and cabinet maker with Shoup Boat Company in Ahoskie NC. In his later years he ran chicken houses. He was the oldest member of Elm Grove Baptist Church. Monk loved hunting and riding around every afternoon with his son.

Funeral services will be held Saturday January 21,  2023 at 2:00 PM at Elm Grove Baptist Church.  Rev. Preston Jernigan will officiate. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Janice J. Jernigan of the home; son, Lyndon Jernigan and his wife Beth of Windsor; grandson, Dustin Jernigan and wife Margaret; great granddaughter, Madison Jernigan; sisters-in-law, Anna Jernigan and Rosie Jernigan; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from home and memorial gifts may be made to Elm Grove Baptist Church, 638 Elm Grove Road, Colerain, NC 27924.
